The day after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008 – 7:42 PM

They have all been telling me what a huge achievement winning Gold is. I realise that but frankly the enormity of the goodwill generated has caught me by surprise. Honestly enough it really has not changed me, I am still the same Abhinav who just a day ago was hanging around alone in my room in the Olympic village. Frankly, all the attention is a bit overwhelming. I am not much good at making loud public pronouncements. That in no way means that this is not the most intense experience of my life.
For more than a decade now my life has been all about my sport. In fact, I do not have a life beyond the confines of the 10m range. I have had a range built in my own home to cut down any possibility of distraction and to be able to practise my sport whenever the fancy strikes me. It all did pay off, didn't it?
It has all still not sunk in. I will post more once the feeling settles.
I ran away from all the media and official attention yesterday after I had done the bit I had do in keeping with my new-found status. Instead I chose to go to a quiet dinner with some friends.
I would like to reiterate that everyone who represents India at the Olympic Games has put in years of toil and sweat. I ask the Indian people to support our athletes more. It is fine to celebrate our achievements but it is just as important to keep up the backing when we are not on top of our game.
It is important for India to do better at Olympic sport as these are the true measure of a nation's sporting depth. I wish more private initiatives come up with corporate support apart from the backing of the government. The joy that the nation feels at my win is humbling. I just wish that this is repeated more and more often.
With our depth of talent and expanse of people I firmly believe India can be a world-class sporting power. What we need are precise systems. I will try to do my bit at grooming the next generation. I would like to appeal to each Indian to also do their bit in prodding us out of sporting complacency.

Abhinav,
You really have made all of us proud and to tell you something, when we heard our national Anthem when you were standing at the podium, it just brought tears in our eyes and we all were waiting for this day to come.

I wish we have lot many days like this in this as well as in all future Olympics. Stay as you are, a down to earth and humble person. Wish you all the best and may you bring more and more glory to our country and make all of us proud.

It is a day to rejoice & solace to all of us that Abhinav Bindra though young in age has bagged gold medal in ten meter air rifle shoot event in Beijing Olympic today, the 11th of July 2008.He bagged this gold medal in his individual capacity whereas the captain of our Indian Hockey Team had won gold medal twenty eight years ago in the Olympic as for his team. The whole country is proud of AbhinavBindra as he has brought a good name & fame of our country by his hard work & firm determination in international arena. He kept our tricolors flag flying at top in the Beijing Olympic that is itself a singular news very soothing & solace to all of us living far & wide. He has established himself very well in international sports arena. He has not only opened avenues only for all those who are at Beijing Olympic for participating in various events to follow his suit but to all the youths of our country who are keenly interested to choose sports as their career to imbibe him to do exceedingly well & bring laurel to our motherland. in their chosen field of sports. Truly speaking, we were very upset with the performance of our participants in Beijing Olympic till yesterday unless we came across this very pleasant & soothing news today. Let us join billions of our countrymen to offer our heartiest congratulations to the young & budding star Abhinav Bindra for his brilliant achievement to bring laurel to our motherland! We wish him all success in his life. He must remember that he has to go long way as it is just the beginning not an end of his sports career. He has become an icon of youth & created history.Let him wish to guide our youth to succeed in the field of sports of their choice! It is well said that he has proved worthy son of his worthy father. You are most welcome to guide youths in right direction as you have become their icon & golden star.

Kudos to you Abhinav,
You were humble in your acceptance of the medal and yet yours is a crowning achievement that the nation has not seen before.

Rightly said, this country has no shortage of talent. The sporting infrastructure needs an overhaul. Apart from that, performances like yours will inspire more kids to take up sports knowing that there is so much glory(and money!) in it also. At the end of the day parents till date still value education and if there is a clash between sports and studies, we know who wins. I just hope our bias against sports as a whole changes now. And that has to begin from the schools.

Enjoy your time mate!

I still cannot believe this!
It feels spectacular!
Quite incredible to have this happen, though 'Goldfinger' Bindra isn't exactly a flash in the pan - he won the World Championships in Zagreb in 2006.
It is an incredible achievement!!! Frankly I did not expect to see an individual gold medal for India in these games. I am pleasantly surprised.
Hearing national anthem of India and seeing Flag of India at the top @ Olympics is very inspiring…
Amazing.

Hi Abhinav,
Firstly a tons of wishes for gaining the rare feat and being the first Indian to do so, a tag which no one can ever take away from you. It makes me feel proud both as an Ex-Stephenian and as an Indian to belong to the place where u spent nearly 5 years in academics. The moment i saw your News on TV channels, I instantly rang up Carver Sir. I congratulated him for your success. He said he is not Sure of the info but he just a minute ago heard it from someone in office. He asked me, " So are you confirming me the news?". I said "yes sir". He replied," I was just waiting for confirmation, and now i ll announce it in school" , the echo of which could be heard throughout the country. I remember to have seen you in the daily assembly in school which at that time was a dream come true for me. I dont know u ll be reading this or not but i feel more proud for u as a human being. U are so mush composed and down to earth even after so much of publicity in media in india and now throughout world. This calmness and composed nature is the biggest strength of yours which made you mentally so much strong that you could face the pressure in the Beijing Shooting Range in order to yield the result in the form of an Olympic Gold medal. Once again Congratulations to you and God Bless you for your future endeavors. GodLuck!!

The collective tears in India out of people crying in joy due to your win would have far exceeded the death of many popular political leaders.

The humility and the grace with which you have accepted this mammoth achievement and the attention you are getting for it is far more impressive, Abhinav. You have your foot firmly rooted to the ground which is a characteristic of only true great men. I can only think of the best of the best like Dr.APJ, Anand, Sachin, Dravid who never got carried away.

I sincerely hope your achievements inspire a lot of youngsters to take up sports more seriously and corporates and government to sponsor sports better

Let this be a tip of an emerging iceberg rather than a one-off victory for India. Inspire Indians into believing that 'Nothing is impossible'

No thanks can ever be sufficient to express the gratitude of Indians to you.

Abhinav,

You have really opened up new avenues for sports persons in India. We Indians pride ourselves on our academics, but we've always been apprehensive about sporting careers. It is people like you who are the source of inspiration to those who have the guts and the focus to choose sports against all odds.

May God always be with you in all your endeavors!

Heartiest Congratulations to you Abhinav. Hope you remain as humble as you've been so far, and here's hoping you do well in future events as well. I had the opportunity of reading about you and your injuries, and how you've managed to come back from behind and make a nation proud. I totally agree with you that the entire country needs to support its sportsmen even during their difficult times. Hope this will now sink in among the entire country. I was really impressed by the humbleness you showed even after winning an Individual gold for India. Stay the same and do well. You've made us proud. :D

Abhinav,
I am following you since you were 17. I was 15 then. One thing for sure ... I always considered as an ideal match for an olympic Gold. Today .. you have not only made us proud but also given me a hope for a bright future.
Hard work pays ... and you have set a burning example for that.

Kudos to your efforts.

Dear Abhinav,
Congrats on a truly incredible achievement. It was a truly incredible feeling watching your win live on the web (Thanks to NBC in the US) and see the Indian National Anthem being played at the medal ceremony. Personally it was a truly proud moment for me as an Indian.

Pursuing any sport other than cricket in india and doing so with the focus needed to win at the Olympics requires some determination and persistence. Your efforts hence need to recognized. I am sure many other athletes deserve the same.

As you have rightly pointed out the "sporting complacency" in India limiting funds and support is what is keeping so many of our athletes from achieving their true potential.

Enjoy the moment and we are cheering for the other Indian shooters and other athletes at the games.

Keep the tricolor flying high.

Cheers.
Raj.

Hearty Congratulations..Stay the same as you are. If you change, then you will not be able to put in the same efforts. Our Cricketers go after money and fame and then success does not follow them.

Thanks for making the country aware that there are other games that do exist and are far more challenging and rewarding than Cricket.

I hope you will bring us more medals and success in future. Wishing you all the best.

India now expects you to be the role model for each youth in India to motivate them to repeat this episode at the Olympics every occasion. You have achieved something that was never done by any individual in the country that has been participating at the Olympics for a century now.

My heartfelt Congrats to you and I am sure you will repeat this Abhinav era at the next Olympics too! Oh God! What a moment for India it is! God bless you brother.
