The day after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008 – 7:42 PM

They have all been telling me what a huge achievement winning Gold is. I realise that but frankly the enormity of the goodwill generated has caught me by surprise. Honestly enough it really has not changed me, I am still the same Abhinav who just a day ago was hanging around alone in my room in the Olympic village. Frankly, all the attention is a bit overwhelming. I am not much good at making loud public pronouncements. That in no way means that this is not the most intense experience of my life.
For more than a decade now my life has been all about my sport. In fact, I do not have a life beyond the confines of the 10m range. I have had a range built in my own home to cut down any possibility of distraction and to be able to practise my sport whenever the fancy strikes me. It all did pay off, didn't it?
It has all still not sunk in. I will post more once the feeling settles.
I ran away from all the media and official attention yesterday after I had done the bit I had do in keeping with my new-found status. Instead I chose to go to a quiet dinner with some friends.
I would like to reiterate that everyone who represents India at the Olympic Games has put in years of toil and sweat. I ask the Indian people to support our athletes more. It is fine to celebrate our achievements but it is just as important to keep up the backing when we are not on top of our game.
It is important for India to do better at Olympic sport as these are the true measure of a nation's sporting depth. I wish more private initiatives come up with corporate support apart from the backing of the government. The joy that the nation feels at my win is humbling. I just wish that this is repeated more and more often.
With our depth of talent and expanse of people I firmly believe India can be a world-class sporting power. What we need are precise systems. I will try to do my bit at grooming the next generation. I would like to appeal to each Indian to also do their bit in prodding us out of sporting complacency.

I was one of those millions of Indians who thought it a matter of pride to decry the achievements of Indian athletes at the Olympics - one of those "oh yes, every time we go, we talk of dozens of medals, but we never come back with any" kinds.

THANK YOU for letting your deeds tell me and people like me that EVERYONE does their best, and the difference between winning and not winning is not significant.

I salute your achievement, but even more, I salute you for remembering all those other Indian athletes in your moment of triumph.

And, I never dreamt I would live to see the day when an Indian stood tall on the victory podium - thank you for making that happen.

Congratulations Abhinav! We are proud of you. Your humility touched me a lot. What you write is correct, we need to support our sportspersons more - because wining is not as easy as it sounds. It is hard work, determination, capacity and a bit of luck. I am sure your win will make Indians aware about the importance of non-cricketing sports. You gave us joy and pride. I prey almighty that you and many more sportspersons would bring this happiness and glory again and again.

Sport is given an almost step motherly treatment in India.

Written by Avnish Anand

Friday, 11 January 2008

Sport is given an almost step motherly treatment in India. While the academic and professional achievements get highlighted, besides a cricketer no other sportsperson is even given an opportunity to attain glory. Avnish Anand suggests a way out.
Brazil is the largest exporter of footballers in the world. India takes the cake when it comes to IT professionals. Economically, the two countries are clubbed together – developing nations on the cusp of global superstardom – two of the countries featured in the now famous BRIC report. But, whereas a Brazilian dreams of sending his kids to the football academies run by Flamengo or Sao Paulo; an Indian only thinks of the IITs and IIMs.

There is no denying however, that, these educational dreams have made India what it is today – a nation teeming with English-speaking, mathematically proficient, technologically and managerially capable individuals, out to capture the world. Jawaharlal Nehru might have established the 'Gandhi Dynasty' in New Delhi – a lineage which could break the Mughals' record of ruling this country, but he more than made up for it by spawning an educational revolution, which has had as much national participation as any other in the history of this country.

The fervent drive to get your child into a top educational institution has also resulted in an overall apathy towards sports. And this is not even a point of debate. By apathy, I mean that Indian parents never dream of making a sportsperson out of children. Not that they'd stop their kids from going out and winning a medal or two at an inter-school event. But their hearts will swell with greater pride if their offspring secures admission into a top-tier b-school. They'll pawn their ancestral land to send you to IIT coaching in Kota but there are few Vece Paes' around who'd send their kids to the Nick Bollettieri Academy for tennis lessons.

Hmmm, but, what about the cricket and tennis academies which have mushroomed all over the country? Well, I suggest you go visit one and check out the ages of the children attending coaching. Not many there would be taking an important public examination in near future. These academies are mostly a replacement for the colony playgrounds, which are fast disappearing. Kids need some physical recreation after all.

So, what is that I am driving at? All of this is well chronicled already. Am I abhorring the parents and calling them educational zealots? Absolutely not. After all, I am a proud product of this educational drive and a grateful one at that. And, I am sure most of you fall into the same category. The idea is to think of newer ways of channeling this drive; the single-minded doggedness which has become the cornerstone of all the economic glory. What if they were equally determined to make sporting heroes out of their kids, a la Brazil?

First, let's make a few things clear. We are largely talking of the Indian middle-class. The upper echelon of society is more assured of securing their kids' future and doesn't necessarily take the education route. And even if they do, their options extend beyond Indian shores. The middle class masses are very limited in their means and subsequently in their dreams as well. They are not bothered about the quality of higher education but about basic education. Various communities like the Chotanagpur tribals actually dream of sporting success – something which might land them a class IV government job. Though given a chance the middle-class has the wherewithal to dream big and stands to gain a lot as well. So we in effect do have all the right ingredients to kick-start a revolution.

Secondly, rather than questioning the premise, please think of ways of making the options workable. Don't write in, that this kind of channeling cannot happen or will not work in the manner envisaged. Think of ways of tinkering with the models to make it a win-win for all involved.

So, here's the proposition. The Indian middle class will do anything to get their kids into an IIT or IIM or even one of the lesser institutions. What if sporting excellence, and excellence here is not just representing your district, could open new doors of admission into one of these hallowed portals. Wouldn't it motivate parents of physically gifted but academically mediocre children to try the alternative route? Could this lead to a paradigm shift in the aspirations of the modern, Indian middle-class parent; producing a new breed of outstanding sportspersons.

Step one is to open new doors of admission. This can be done in two ways. But first a statutory warning- 'Please read through the entire article and do think about it. Don't just jump out of your seat'.

One way of doing it is by having a sports quota in all the top academic institutions, all of them. Make it mandatory like the SC/ST reservation. And simultaneously encourage all kinds of inter-college competitions. In India, we live with admissions (a large number at that) based on class and community. I guess not many would mind having a few based on athletic ability and that too of the highest order. At least, these guys will bring in the sporting laurels. Some will win international honours. And all of us would certainly take enough pride in that. For those of you, who still need convincing, go check out the frenzied atmosphere during inter-hostel clashes in the nearest IIT. Delhi cricket benefited from the sports quotas in Delhi University and the Hindu- Stephens rivalry has churned out India regulars, frequently. And this was before the IT revolution when school goers nursed ambitions of making it to a top DU college. Also, there will be enough old boys contributing to the development of new infrastructure. In the US or the UK, where college sports are huge, alumni make all kinds of contributions to make their alma mater an athletic powerhouse. If Vinod Gupta can set up VG SOM, there will be others to fund stadiums and equipment with so much pride at stake.

The challenge will be to define the level of sporting achievement to be eligible; the number of seats to be made available through this route and setting a minimum academic benchmark.

In India, people fabricate fake caste certificates to take advantage of reservation system. The sporting qualification should not be based on some worthless piece of paper but achievements which were media-worthy – a national-level performance at the very least. As for the number of seats, it should not be too few - so that it doesn't motivate or too many - so that the run of the mill guys stand a chance to make it. We need to encourage people with real potential. The academic benchmark is imperative to ensure that the incoming athletes don't make for miserable academic misfits. There are enough sportspersons who are blessed with scholastic aptitude. Rahul Dravid's brother is an IIM graduate and his parents had ensured that had he himself not made it as a cricketer, he would still have had a successful alternate career. Having the comfort of a sports quota for their son would have given them greater confidence to encourage young Rahul's cricketing dreams. There are others as well – the likes of Kumble and Srinath who have strong academic backgrounds.

The other model could be an extension of the sports hostels system which has borne great fruit for UP cricket and Orissa hockey. Have sports colleges which offer top-notch sports training as well as high-quality professional education to student athletes. A precedent for a college with 100% reservation was set with the establishment of the Army Institute of Technology in Pune. This was done to benefit the defense children who suffer from the nature of their father's job. Why not give a similar cushion to aspiring champions who have to make a few academic sacrifices. The education imparted in this model might be a little inferior to the IITs and IIMs but the standard of sports infrastructure will be top-notch. Rather than distributing the meager sports budget over a numerous colleges, the authorities can limit it to these specialized institutions.

That takes care of step one. Step two is to examine whether these new opportunities can harness the obsession of the Indian middle-class. The idea is to change the mindset. Most Indian parents live by the dictum – 'Padhoge Likhoge To Banoge Nawab, Kheloge Kudoge To Banoge Kharab'. They know that very few make it to the top of the sporting pyramid and the gulf between the haves and the have-nots in terms of financial rewards is humongous. And if you leave a few sports like cricket and football, the haves also have difficult lives. Stories of Asian champs working as ticket collectors are abound. For most Indians a career in sports is too risky a proposition. Now the risk of failure is minimized. Their children have two routes to a great education and the sporting route has the upside of sporting glory as well. In some cases the sporting route could be the easier one. It's like two jobs, where one pays a little less but gives you ESOPS also. And thanks to the new professional leagues lots of second-rung talent can also earn a decent living from the sport. Please be aware of the fact that a national champion in any sport in any age category stands a very good chance of winning a sports scholarship to a US university as well. Could a combination of these factors herald a sporting revolution?

India is not exactly a country full of physically gifted young people. But with our kind of population, a small percentage also could be a lot. And the idea is to give this lot their best chance, with the full backing of their parents and the back-up of a college degree. Will Mr Arjun Singh please stand up?

Indians practise mediocrity every day in their life whether it is laying out new roads or building bridges. You have shown what is perfection and this has crossed all borders. Your achievement has made its presence felt even in the corporate world and people like me have once again starting believing in India which has been hit by the corrupt policies prevalent everywhere. May god bless you and may this victory be "the first of many"...keep it up boy!!

However, seems the real challenge for you starts now.

Hope to see the attitue and patriotism higher than that of Pullela Gopichand in you and may God give you strength that you dont fall in performance and patriotism to the corporate sponsors and media attention like that to almost all our cricketers.

Abhi...after all this...Indian youth looks as a role model.
Pls emulate some standards so that Indian youth will not be misled.

Also one point, I want to add is when we watch basket ball, volleyball it seems they are all games for tall people. What India can do there when the average height is 5.7".It is not fair on Indian talents and skills.
May be that is the reason we can do good in Shooting, chess etc.

HI Abhi,

The sight of watching the Indian flag being raised bought tears to my eyes. This is one of the proudest moment for every Indian.

Unknown said...

I agree with you Abhinav. We've to support the athletes for the efforts they put in for years even if they aren't peaking at the Olympics.I was a trifle disappointed this morning after learning that both Samresh and Rathore didn't fair well in their respective events, followed by the news about the archers ,but then I read your blog post and realized that they'd still need us to support them.Perhaps, your achievement will help us do just that...Believe...and hopefully this will be a great step towards building the Olympics Culture. It's true that corporates will see the potential here ,but yes, we will try and do our part as citizens of this country in creating that Olympics culture. There's absolutely no feeling like excelling at the Olympics and the tearful joy that you gifted to your countrymen actually came as a surprise to many because many would have been shocked at the kind of emotions they experienced yesterday!!!But no ones complaining about the tears and silently even praying for more as those medals from Beijing find our countrymen standing on the podium with their held high to our national anthem. Rock on Bro!! Wish you More Medals!!Not just for your sake, but ours.

abhinav,

Heartiest Congratulations!!! .wining a gold indicates that you are no.1 shooter in 10-meter event in the world.
And the whole India is proud of it.

i am sure, when you will come back , there will be huge gesture.

i liked your attitude after the event , you were calm, was happy but not over-reacting with the situation , that shows mental toughness of yours.

I request you behalf of every indian , ( Yes i can make a request to you because you are the ONE who has enough power to change anyone decision by advising authority ) that you make forward step to bring every sport-person of India at the international level.

Basically, our politics is so bad that its hard for common man to reach out there. I have seen , ppls with enough sport talent in India but due to xxx politics they remains at the same position where they came from.

I will not ruin your Happiest moment of your life though, Best luck & am dam sure you will continue the same , again ..again & again.
