the end to my Olympics....

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 – 9:20 AM
So it is now over and the time for me to return home has arrived. I know my life is not goign to be even close to the same upon return but it is something i am going to have to embrace and actually enjoy which i am at this moment finding way more daunting than shooting...
The truth is i am scared because it is not somethign i am familiar it but i would like to take this opportunity to thank all my fans and all my well wishers who have rooted for me and all those who have left such kind comments on the blog page as well.
i have finished reading all the comments but i am hoping to catch up once i am home and the media hype dies down.
I also want to wish the other participating the best of luck...although i am not going to be around seeing them at the village i will be definitely rooting for them from back home. I am hoping we cna come back with some more medals because we have all worked so hard and really deserve some more.

dear abhinav,

congratulations! salutations!!

i do the morning show on radio mirchi, ahmedabad - 'hello ahmedabad'.

when major chilly had won the silver, i was on air. i had asked my listeners to switch off the radio and watch the ceremony at that point and be a witness of the historic moment. i really prayed that this time too, when india wins a medal, i should be the messenger to ahmedabad.

i missed the proud moment on radio. the day you won it for us, i was on leave. i watched the entire ceremony on tv.

in the language of bhagwad geeta, you are a 'sthitapragna' arjun in the truest sense.

i would want to do an interview with you once you are through with the entire media hype.

thank you...

Hi Abhinav,
That day when you won the gold medal a message came in the class and everyone was clapping and everyone was feeling so proud on you. Today I was watching your press conference, an attitude of detachment was surrounding you and moreover you were so humble when everyone just wanted to know more about you. It is really hard to handle so much attention. But you seems the same Abhinav as you were before winning the gold (who is quite and just want to remain unaffected by the fame).
May God give you the inner strength to achieve more in your life and always be like this.

While most of us (including myself)talk(ed) the talk, you walked the walk. I hope your first step paves way for more glory.
While what Phelps is doing in this olympics is great, I'd rather put your achievement on the top. And you are definitely right in saying, you got the monkey off...not just from your back, but the country as a whole.
Congratulations from Elkridge, MD.

Hi Abhinav,

Firstly my hearty congrats on bejhalf of Bangaloreans.

Secondly, the most amazing thing which is still striking from the moment you won the GOLD medal is your body language....it is simply great. You and the whole world know that you have done something which was not done by anybody from last 100+ years...and after that you stand calm and not expressing out huge emotions.....where any other individual would have bursted out in great heights. I really admire and like your gutsy body language and character you have shown up to the outerworld. Not everbody can have those instinct in them and people who are mentally strong can only be in handling their emotions so well.

Hats off.....not only for your GOLD, but for your behaviour which is more than the GOLD.....Take care

Abhinav, what an achivement it has been! Hearty Congrats! I am sure that this is just the beginning though. We as a nation have much more to achieve and I am confident, we will achieve it. One thing that stands out about you is that circumstances don’t change you, which is pretty much evident from the way you conduct yourself in the public. Your control over your emotions is phenomenal. Congrats again and be yourself as you always are. Will wait to comment on you next blog.

Dear Abhinav,

I wonder if there is any word I can found ever to describe the great thing you did...
Everyone should better call you 'SIR Abhinav Bindra'. The generations will come and will going to feel proud about this.

Govt. of India should owner you with 'BHARAT RATNA' now.
Because you are the one who really deserves it. I want to appeal to every citizen of this country to support this movement to forward your name for Bharat ratna.

God bless you forever..

Thanks a looooooottttttt.....

Dear Abhinav,

By the time you get to this comment, you might be through with the standard fare of congratulatory messages ... and I can't make mine any different.

All I can say that is that I was an ordinary Indian puffed up with pride, and all thanks to you. I was super-zapped to see that other guy crying ... he knew the time had come, India's time has come ...

The end you say ... I say its the beginning ...

Ah, one more Independence day. Lack of diversity in sports (international) is another weak point we Indians have. Since our Independence, we have created four Indias by population(from 250 million to 1.1 billion), but haven't developed four international sports that have mass appeal in India and could compete consistently all over the world. We are still hanging on to pathetic sports like Cricket. The way we have created unnecessary diversity like casteism, we would have spent that time developing new sports.

You deserve the media attention and popularity for bringing success to yourself that many in India cannot even dream of. It needs lot of grit (especially in India) to be where you are today.
We will look forward to seeing you getting more medals for yourself and India for years to come and changing the course of sports …especially how sports is treated in India.
Let many parents feel proud by seeing your success and encourage their kids towards it.

Food for thought: Just by being sports person in India (barring cricket) do not give sports person a good status in society , they lack financial back up for their sports, also sports do not get money for them to run their homes, how then can one see India coming up in sports,…india just believe in producing engineers, doctors and lawyers, MAYBE india is still not mature yet to produce sports person. India as society believe in mental development and not on physical/sports development . It is considered waste of time whereas in other developed country it is about doing what you can do best and what you enjoy the most…. Society in Europe and States do not govern people’s decision….and the effect of this we see in international sports event where India is no where existing barring your medal.
Your dream to bring 20-30 international medals in sports will come true if sports people are valued and celebrated in India.

Unknown said...

Thankyou.

Thankyou for working so hard, completely on your own, and then letting us all share in your glory.

The medal by rights belongs to YOU, not to the Indian government which is now running to felicitate you, nor the sponsors who are now homing in on you, nor to people like me who are feeling proud of being an Indian from overseas.

It is your individual effort crowned with success....I am just grateful, as each Indian should be, that you devoted your life to the medal, and as a consequence, we can all say that India won an individual gold medal at the Olympics!

You gave me a whole day of unadulterated joy and pride, and for that I am endlessly thankful:)

Congratulations - on the Gold medal of course, but also on the way you chose to handle media afterwords.

Really proud of you.
