The day after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008 – 7:42 PM

They have all been telling me what a huge achievement winning Gold is. I realise that but frankly the enormity of the goodwill generated has caught me by surprise. Honestly enough it really has not changed me, I am still the same Abhinav who just a day ago was hanging around alone in my room in the Olympic village. Frankly, all the attention is a bit overwhelming. I am not much good at making loud public pronouncements. That in no way means that this is not the most intense experience of my life.
For more than a decade now my life has been all about my sport. In fact, I do not have a life beyond the confines of the 10m range. I have had a range built in my own home to cut down any possibility of distraction and to be able to practise my sport whenever the fancy strikes me. It all did pay off, didn't it?
It has all still not sunk in. I will post more once the feeling settles.
I ran away from all the media and official attention yesterday after I had done the bit I had do in keeping with my new-found status. Instead I chose to go to a quiet dinner with some friends.
I would like to reiterate that everyone who represents India at the Olympic Games has put in years of toil and sweat. I ask the Indian people to support our athletes more. It is fine to celebrate our achievements but it is just as important to keep up the backing when we are not on top of our game.
It is important for India to do better at Olympic sport as these are the true measure of a nation's sporting depth. I wish more private initiatives come up with corporate support apart from the backing of the government. The joy that the nation feels at my win is humbling. I just wish that this is repeated more and more often.
With our depth of talent and expanse of people I firmly believe India can be a world-class sporting power. What we need are precise systems. I will try to do my bit at grooming the next generation. I would like to appeal to each Indian to also do their bit in prodding us out of sporting complacency.

I wish to thank your parents for supporting you to chose an alternate profession. We wish all the athletes of the present contingent a good luck. I sincerely wish that the Government and corporates encourage more promising athletes and help them take sports as a profession. With more than a billion people with immense talent, I am sure if the potential is harnessed properly, we could become the world's sporting super country very soon.

I join my fellow country men in thanking you for your achievement which has made us so proud and wish you many many more successes in the coming days.

It is very rare to find talent and humility in a same person and you have it both in you. Let this unique quality in you remain forever and help you scale greater heights.

I'm mighty happy that God chose you for India's first individual gold medal. So deservingly it came to you -- a guy who has the knack of achieving firsts. U got us the first medal (a bronze) at World Cup in 2001 after Dr Karni Singh got a silver way back in 60s. U won the first world championship in 2006. And now, the biggest of them all -- the Olympic Gold. I'm happy to see that ur amazing talent and incredible hard work has finally paid off so beautifully.

I'm also happy for Dr Bindra and your mother, who stood by you unwaveringly when the nation had given up.

Your victory also goes to prove that good guys do win. And can win the biggest of them all. Congrats mate! I'm truly happy for you.

Indeed, Abhinav, we need precise world-class systems/training facilities in India where 1/1000th of second makes difference in winning medal or qualifying for the event.

Hi Abhinav,

Congrats!!!..You have made us (a nation devoid of olympic heroes) really proud..To see the Indian tricolor flying in the ceremony was really a moment of pride and joy. Hope the tricolor flies in the years to come too.Kindly Request you to do ur part in making shooting accessible to those who have high talent but not the means to get this glory and not to lose your head in this media hype.

Congratulations!

Yours maybe the only medal so far, but it seems that slowly and steadily the Indian athletes are getting closer and closer, be it the boxers who are now into the round of 16, or badminton players, or even swimmers who are qualifying in the heaths.
So, we might not get a basketfull of medals this year, but we are getting there.
Congratulations once more on proving that there is more to sports than advertising and good PR. :)

Thanks Abhinav for that one moment which has lifted the spirit of the entire nation. The moment where the national anthem was being played and the tri-colour being hoisted has brought so much joy.

I hope this awakens the corporates from their slumber of neglecting all the other sports except cricket, considering the talent we have in India.

Kudos to you man!!! :)

I would rate this post of yours on par with the gold medal itself.

Such clarity of thought, level-headedness and humility. Appreciate you not blaming the government, but urging each and every individual to do their bit. We indians are good at blaming at Government institutions but shy away from individual bits.

I'm sure you will inspire next generation of sports persons.

We are proud of you.

My heart wept when I kept watching you on the podium with the national anthem and the tri colour rising...I kept watching it again and again and again..and will keep watching it ..It not only makes me proud, but inspires me with a gush of goose bumps all over.I'm sure this will inspire every Indian to excel and do well in one's own field and give it all to make a better India. Thanks for inspiring a nation....I really dont know if you see how you have taken your country to a new high.I guess your temperament is just right for your sport..minimal movement while shooting..minimal of emotional display.10 years is a hard time in a sport...knowing your past and your toil seems very painful...but hey..no pain no gain...till you achieve the "ever elusive gold medal"...oops..no more elusive!!!!!

The indian public is not known for long memory!!!

well not to sound repetetive but I do want to say that you have made us all proud. We also know that its not the 'system' which made you but your sheer grit and labor though having a rich and indulgent father helped (hetoo deserves kudos for believing in you).
My only advice would be to SHOW SOME EMOTIONS MAN. Its allright to be in sport where calmness rules but don't let people assume it be arrogance.
Thanks for being born in India and more so for not migrating over. A bilion people loves you for that.

It is not everyday that the Indian Tricolor stands proud at the Olympics..It is not everyday that the Indian National Anthem is sung in China..
It is not everyday that India wins a gold..!!
..and it is not everyday that a humble and modest medal bearer is born in India..!!
You are the ONE..!!

Let not the mundane matters of the world here change you..you have much more medals to get home..!!

Welcome back to India..a land of a billion "proud of you" people..!!

Oh, Abhinav with your simple words U have once again proved that U deserve the kind of acclaim U already own. U proved it on Olympic shooting range and now with words. It seems U were constantly thinking about the well being of sports in India. Indeed the Gold at Olympic gave U the strength to write such things. We must appreciate it, we Indians are emotional people, so to prove a point rather than rational, emotions makes it easy. In Marathi Abhinav means 'Totally NEW', I hope your Gold will give Abhinav kind of transformation to the attitude about sports, in Indian minds. Let me once again congratulate U for all those super proud moments. We as youth have an Golden IDOL to follow, Thank you very much and pl. be like this only!!!

Hi abi.. first of all my hearty congratulation ... for ac hiving a gold medal. It took so many decades to get a individual gold medal in Olympic and 28 year to get a 2ND gold medal for India. This proves .. we are far behind in sports compare to the rest of the world. It doesn't mean that we dont have potential or power to competite but we restricted our self with only one sport.

Abbi - Now. U have given a good start not only in the Olympic but also in the Indian sport history. My wish and hope is to follow this achievement in every completions and in every segment.

HELLO ITS GREAT ACHIEVEMENT FOR INDIA. YOU HAD DONE A GREAT SHOW. ITS A PROUD FOR INDIA. THAT AFTER 28 YEARS INDIA WON ONE GOLDMEDAL IN OLYMPICS.
BUT WHEN I READ TODAYS NEWSPAPER ONE THOUGHT CAME IN MY MIND JUST THINK ON THAT. U R VERY LUCKY THAT U GOT SUCH A GREAT AND RICH PARENTS SO THEY CAN SPEND MONEY TO DEVELOP YOUR TALENT BUT IN INDIA THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT THEY HAVE TALENT BUT THEY DON'T HAVE A MONEY TO DEVELOP THEIR TALENT AND SHOW THEIR TALENT. YOUR DAD HAD DESIDE TO GIVE U 200 CRORE HOTEL IN GIFT BUT JUST THINK IF U AND YOUR DAD SPEND 5% OF THESE MONEY SO MANY TALENTED PLAYERS WE CAN GET AND INDIA CAN GET MANY MORE ABHINAV BINDRA. THIS THOUGHT NEED A THINKING.
IT IS NO DEBET ON YOUR ACHIEVEMENT. U R A GREAT PLAYER. THERE IS NO EVEN THINK ABOUT IT BECAUSE U R EXCELLENT. CONGRATES ONCE AGAIN TO U AND TO YOUR FAMILY.
