The day after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday, August 11, 2008 – 7:42 PM

They have all been telling me what a huge achievement winning Gold is. I realise that but frankly the enormity of the goodwill generated has caught me by surprise. Honestly enough it really has not changed me, I am still the same Abhinav who just a day ago was hanging around alone in my room in the Olympic village. Frankly, all the attention is a bit overwhelming. I am not much good at making loud public pronouncements. That in no way means that this is not the most intense experience of my life.
For more than a decade now my life has been all about my sport. In fact, I do not have a life beyond the confines of the 10m range. I have had a range built in my own home to cut down any possibility of distraction and to be able to practise my sport whenever the fancy strikes me. It all did pay off, didn't it?
It has all still not sunk in. I will post more once the feeling settles.
I ran away from all the media and official attention yesterday after I had done the bit I had do in keeping with my new-found status. Instead I chose to go to a quiet dinner with some friends.
I would like to reiterate that everyone who represents India at the Olympic Games has put in years of toil and sweat. I ask the Indian people to support our athletes more. It is fine to celebrate our achievements but it is just as important to keep up the backing when we are not on top of our game.
It is important for India to do better at Olympic sport as these are the true measure of a nation's sporting depth. I wish more private initiatives come up with corporate support apart from the backing of the government. The joy that the nation feels at my win is humbling. I just wish that this is repeated more and more often.
With our depth of talent and expanse of people I firmly believe India can be a world-class sporting power. What we need are precise systems. I will try to do my bit at grooming the next generation. I would like to appeal to each Indian to also do their bit in prodding us out of sporting complacency.

Hi Abhinav,

I really wonder if you read your comments! First of all a huge congratulations on this wonderful feat.

A section of media is attributing this quote to your father-

Silent killer, as described by his father, he is the one who spotted his son's talent when Abhinav was 5 years old. "He kept a water balloon on our maid's head and began shooting, knowing little that a slight mistake could have proved fatal. But his aim was so perfect that I couldn't think about anything else but make him a pro," says AS Bindra.

Google it if you wish, it has been widely circulated by the media.

Did he really mean that the gun you had at the age of five could have been fatal to your maid? Sounds quite far fetched but then just thought I would mention it.

Dear Abhinav,

U have done the impossible, it is not easy i don't think anyone else can repeat this for a long time to come. Our foolish politicians are claiming that we will win many medals at olympics in future, but we all know it is nearly impossible. After 108 years our champion has become a olympic champion. Remember he is no fluke a world champion, commonwealth champion and many more medals. He has put 12 years day in and day out in this sport, no social functions, no personal life, it is difficult. I don't know how can we claim more medals and that too olympic golds. I used to be a athlete, with me practised a boy gurpreet singh, who went on to break gurbachan singh randhawa's 110m hurdles record set at olympics. He was lucky he got a job in railways but most of them are not. We are still chasing our own records set in 60's how can we be champs. These rogue politicians are the real culprits. I wish u all luck, u have given us a reason to smile, thanks for that. I wish ur olympic medal is displayed at some museum otherwise memory of indians is very short. With this achievement u are not less than god, May god bestow all his happiness upon u.

The immense feeling of pride and joy of having seen an Indian do it individually justs thrills me enough to say "You are it" You have created history yes!! and I hope you do it everytime and I urge the athletes and sportspeople we have in this country to play to win and participate. You never know when you can do better than the other people when you are determined enough. Well Congratulations!!! You are certainly your parents' bundle of joy!!

congrats Abhinav but yes i agree with you...yes, the world salutes when we win and doesn't bother when we don't...
the hard work, the long hours of toil, the moments of indecisiveness, the fleeting moments of diffidence , the lack of luck!!, the absence of proper coaching due to reasons beyond our means .....are all there in every field of life...
let us learn to applaud all who strive sincerely in any field.. bcoz its only over our efforts that we have control.. not on the fruits thereof..
all the best in giving your best!!

It was truely inspiring to see you get the gold, which is the result of your hardwork and perseverence. It needs a very big heart to such a level of commitment at the international level, hats off to you...

A humbel request and hope from every indian is that this is just the beginning of many more acheivements.Being a sportsperson yourselves ,you know exactly what India lags in getting recogonisation at the internatinal level and the poor plight of other sportstars and sports and the facilities that they require.....

You have become a national icon overnight(if not already been)and you can ignite something that no one else can think off...With the gold medal, comes to you the responsibility to promote that underated athletes who dont always get the admiration that they deserve for their hardwork...Knowing you as a person who is having a blog and openly writing your mind,I salute you from my heart..GOD bless you..

Abhinav,

You have really made us proud. Your calm and mature approach after winning gold was really commendable.

Hopefully your success will boost the morale of other members in the Olympic squad. I hope this will open the eyes of people in power and the corporates who pour money and support to cricket.

I believe any major achievement in major tournaments should be backed by money and infrastructure. Of course talent is the single most important aspect, but we need to provide better infrastructure and support for our athletes. Moreover, sports is not even in the picture of an average Indian's dreams now. People tend to spend their time only studying and to get a job asap to support their families. wherein developed countries tap talent right from school and coach them properly.

I am not a pessimist, I am sure that your win will initiate changes in the way society and government looks at sports and hopefully we will be able to find talents from our vast, talented and diversified population. Jai Hind.

I hope u'll make good use of that entire “people's money” that has been showered onto you by petty politicians and other “crore patis”…. Try to disperse it towards people who need it most…In your possession it’s a scanty sum, but its paucity is a shackle for them…for you it can be like a splendid wine-a pure luxury; for them it’s definitely bread that can keep them alive to earn next day’s bread…it’s the differential…

hi Abhinav,
Congratulations for your success, we all were so happy to see u win the gold. Me and my husband had both taken a leave from the office and my husband was watching every moment of the ur final event. He was rejoiced and jumped off his seat the moment u hit the bullseye. It was a moment of great happiness and pride for all of us.
But I agree it is true that we all need to play our roles, something is really missing in our confidence levels that depite of coming so close to the victory we are usually deprived of medals, I think lot of private organizations need to come up and motivate our society to find the talent in our children and groom them accordingly. Hats off to ur parents who really showed so much of commitment to your goals and above all to you who depite being so affluent was focussed on the goal. May god bless you and may lot of parents change their outlook and instead of forcing childeren to get good merit in schools motivate them to chase their passion.

Dear Fellow Countrymen

Greeting s of historic day in indian sports we wish to see more golden days in sporting arena in coming years, the most powerfull statement made by the victory in 20-20,australian cricket tour, boxing performance, wrestling performance icing on cake gold medal of abhinav, other achivements of sana nehwal in badminton & host of other budding sporting personalities, this is power of INDIAN YOUTH, detrmination of indian youth the hunger for sporting excellence is being seen, in many the role of rural india in bringing up world class sportsman , governments can only give cash awards to achievers but in policy making they dont have will to develop infrastructure in rural india for excellence in sports, there are n numbers of middle class athelete who are toiling hard without trainers & facilities & more than 1 BILLION PEOPLE WANT THEM TO EXCEL

ABHINAV BINDRA----- GOLD MEDAL--- SELF MOTIVATOR WITH OWN INFRASTRUCTURE
BOXING TRIO OF AKHIL/JEETENDER/VIJENDER----- BHIWANI BOXING CLUB
WRESTELER SHUSHIL KR---- SATPAL AKHARA
CRICKETERS-- PRAVEEN KUMAR JEETENDER KUMAR ETC

ALL ARE MIDDLE CLASS YOUTH EXCEPT ABHINAV WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT THEY HAVE EXCELLED

HOCKEY TEAM ---- 2008 NOT QUALIFIED STILL ihf is controlling the game

football--- asian games qualified

the big ? is government role in sports isnt it shamefull, will government act in more professional way for development of sports,
by awarding cash prizes & not spending adequately in sporting infrastrucure, is just like bathing in limelight for few days then forgeting the main issue

request for media not to divide sport lovers victory of indian sportsmen

cricket hockey football boxing wrestling shooting tennis badminton the indian youth enjoy the same but telecast of gramin games or national games is never a focus area of modern day media, club matches are not profesionally telecasted, will media take the responsibility of same

time has come to create infrastructure for sports at district levels, policies must be made to be implemented
