One More to go......

Friday, August 15, 2008 – 7:02 PM
So independence day was all the more vibrant as akhil kumar made us all proud.... I was really excited especially since he was another athlete who was down with a career threatening injury and so his resurrection is all the more impressive.
As i have said so many times before ALL our athletes are there giving their hearts out and some win and some lose but that doesn't belittle their effort in any way.
So now i am again praying for some more boxing success today with Jitender Kumar and Vijender fighting also for places in the quarters. Then on Monday spend the day on the edge of my seat waiting for my compatriots to bring home the hardware.
Wow how life has changed, just a week ago i was this guy walking around the village with few people even knowing what i was doing. I was often sitting around my room and actually getting bored, and now i am spending my time hoping i can go back to being that same guy.
Anyway I am now turning my focus and positive vibes to the pugilists.... COME ON INDIA!!!!

Hi Abhinav:
Its not only I, but most of the Indians didnt care to even notice you during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. We were busy surfing cricket channels and watching those who have been promising for a long time but havent been able to deliver. I believe you deserve an apology from the entire nation. By winning this medal, you have made a cricket crazy country to sit back and take notice. Its amazing to keep focus when you know the odds are against you but you still did it. Your dedication is truly unmatched. We say "Sorry" for whatever we have done by not supporting you as Indian spectators. Congratulations to you on your marvellous feat, you have made us re-discover the improbable nature of truimph.

We all are with you in this hope of "More Medals". And It doesn't look like a "Mere Hope" now.
It was heartening to see the way Akhil faought. With his Guard Down and an eyes firmly on the opponents moves.
We were a group of friends watching it live on TV and None of us, not even for a split second, even when Akhil was trailing, thought that he will lose.
On the other hand Leander and Mahesh lost but that does not take away the service they have done to the Nation.

Hats off to You for being so down to earth !!! Hats off to your parents too , eventhough you have evrything in 2 days life , you have waited for 12 years to achieve your dream !! I can simply guess the days when you have failed and with injuries periods, i can understand what must be going through your mind !!
Its a passion and some madness as per todays world , you have achieved this .
After reading your story, entire credit goes to you , your parrents , friends and your support system !!!!
No Govt officials can claim that you are their product , thats why I like you wherein you have simply stated that 2day I was winner and others are too trying hard !!!
Being able to participate itself is a achievement and on being top, what more can one ask for !!! Sania Nehval , Akhilesh , they are heroes and people should acknowledge them too eventhough they might return empty handed , then only we have sports culture !!!

I salute you for trendsetter and having overcome the tag off chokers in pressure that Indians are known far !!

Convey my special regards for your parents and your support staff !!!

so now its time you keep up your promise of doing your bit in making india a sporting nation.....but you never seem to hint about the people seeking your help through their posts.....its upto you to do it or not.... u say that some private sectors also have to take interests to make India a sporting nation....
but y dont you take the first step....u r a billionaire by yourself!!!or atleast you can make the officials do something...i dont know whether you r already involved in dat process...if so let us know....i know this is highly irritating......but stardom has some responsiblities i believe....sorry for irritating u in a page that's supposed to sing your praises....

Congrats Abhinav, It is customary to be polite especially if you greet the first Indian Gold winner in an individual sport ever in Olympics.

I am sure now you can see for yourself how from being an elitist, a snob and what ever the Indian Sports officials used to think of you, have turned into the darling of the Government, after all like on their 50th Independence Day they had nothing to celebrate for, in contrast to the Indian Diaspora the world over which did have more to celebrate. This jolted the Indian Government to wake up from their stupor. Like wise on this 62nd Independence Day it is you the elitist who have given them a towel by which they can wipe some of the blood from their bloodied noses.

There is nothing to beat success, as you are well aware........

No matter what, India has always been shining, thanks to the individuals who inspite of and not due to the Indian Government and its policies/working.

We as individuals salute your determination and collectedness.

Do give some motivational talks at our local schools in Punjab so that an effort is made to chanelise our youth into medal winners rather than winning in the race to submission to the scourge of drugs.

Cheers!

Hello Abhinav, good to see an instant-super star (in India) behave the way you've been the last few days... A lesson perhaps for the self (and media) proclaimed Indian cricketers.. For me, this is what the younger lot of India requires: Humility & discipline. Hope you've 'impressed' at least some of them. Best wishes.

My humble request to you:-

Please keep talking to media, ministers and other influential govt. officials to improve the sports infrastructure.
Please invest a major chunk of the cash awards that is pouring to you to reward and motivate the others sporting persons who are not from a financially sound background like you.
That way, your name will not be forgotten after the intial euphoria but will remain inscribed in our heart forever.

Indian pugilists have really done us proud, I was lucky enough to catch Akhil vs Sergei LIVE, even the foreign commentator was all praises for him. It just shows how little we know of our sportsmen, it's just when they perform do they pop-up in the limelight(maybe it's a way of life).

Maybe if the media gives a bit more air-time/newsprint space to the unknown faces, they'll be encouraged to perform even better, with the country behind them!

Anyways want to congratulate you on your feat.At the end of the day it was your dedication, discipline and focus for all these years, which gave us a gold medal!

You must've been thrilled like the rest of us to learn that both qualified for the quarters! It'd sure be a great feeling to see them win their respective bouts. As for wanting to be the same guy , well Abhinav, when the whole country is looking up to you for direction in sports ,it's not easy to be the same person :-) but then again, I am hoping that your focus and inspiration ,if affected by this , will only get better! Cheers bro!
